Things to Do in Bologna
in July 2026
Concerts, festivals, open-air cinema, soul music in the Apennines and much more. July is the most vibrant month of the Bolognese summer: here is your complete guide to missing nothing.
Bologna never sleeps in summer. While many Italian cities slow down under the July sun, Bologna accelerates: concerts in the parks, festivals in the Apennines, open-air cinema in Piazza Maggiore, exhibitions in historic palaces and a nightlife that stretches late into the night beneath the famous porticoes. The summer of 2026 is a particularly rich one — here is everything you need to know to make the most of it.
Sequoie Music Park — the festival of the summer
The beating heart of Bologna's musical summer is Sequoie Music Park, the season-long festival that from 16 June to 23 July 2026 fills the Parco delle Caserme Rosse with an extraordinary programme of international and Italian concerts. Now in its sixth edition and expecting over 100,000 visitors, the festival takes place in a unique setting — a large urban park at the heart of Bologna — with food areas, social spaces and a strong commitment to sustainability.
The July programme is particularly packed. Here are the concerts not to miss:

Porretta Soul Festival — the soul of the Apennines
Fifty kilometres from Bologna, among the hills of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, there is a festival that draws passionate fans from around the world every year. The Porretta Soul Festival returns from 23 to 26 July 2026 in Porretta Terme: four days in which the entire town is transformed, with two stages, a central piazza, and soul, blues and gospel music echoing through the streets. An unmissable event, faithful to itself for over thirty years, with a devoted audience and an energy you can feel simply walking through the town.

Open-air cinema in Piazza Maggiore
Every summer, the heart of Bologna becomes the most evocative open-air cinema in Italy. The Sotto le Stelle del Cinema season — part of Bologna Estate 2026 — screens a film every evening in Piazza Maggiore with free admission, from early June through to mid-August. It is one of the finest experiences Bologna offers in summer: bring a blanket, settle on the steps of the Palazzo del Podestà and watch a film under the stars with the profile of San Petronio as your backdrop.
Reno Splash Festival and independent festivals
For those seeking a more informal and community-spirited atmosphere, July also brings the Reno Splash Festival in Marzabotto, among the green hills of the Apennines on the banks of the River Reno: a stage, friends, unstructured days and the energy typical of independent festivals. An event designed for anyone who wants to experience music freely, immersed in nature.
Exhibitions and culture
July in Bologna is also a rich month from a cultural point of view. Exhibitions currently on include:
- Saul Leiter at Palazzo Pallavicini — photographs, paintings and archival material on New York in the second half of the twentieth century
- Dürer's Apocalypse at the Pinacoteca Nazionale — the 15 woodcuts from the 1511 edition
- Ruth Orkin at Palazzo Pallavicini — 187 images by the great twentieth-century photographer
- First European exhibition of contemporary Chinese calligraphy at the Collezioni Comunali d'Arte — more than 40 artists
Practical tips for visiting Bologna in July
- Book tickets in advance — many Sequoie Music Park dates are already sold out. Always check on TicketOne or Dice before planning your trip.
- Get around by bus or bike — summer traffic around Parco delle Caserme Rosse and Stadio Dall'Ara can be heavy on concert evenings. TPER runs extra services on event nights.
- Arrive the evening before — if you are travelling from outside Bologna for a concert, staying overnight avoids the stress of a late return. Availability fills up quickly around the biggest dates.
- Explore the city centre in the morning — July is hot, but the mornings beneath the porticoes are cool and perfect for discovering the towers, markets and historic trattorias.
